| Language Arts & Literature Grades 8th & Up 8:30am-9:30am Book fee $30 or bring your own. This is an excellent class for upper middle and lower high school students. Students will learn how to read a work analytically and discuss its merit beyond just a book report. Students will also learn how to journal the events of a work that will later help them when testing and recalling written information (for an essay, comprehsnion questions, etc). Students will also be encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas with the class on each work but will not be made to feel 'on the spot'. We will also review the fundamentals of language arts and lightly touch upon middle school grammar. Works we will study include- Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, Call of the Wild by Jack London, Gift of the Magi & Other Short Stories by O'Henry, A Christmas Carol by Dickens, The Gold-bug & Other Tales by Poe, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, Young Goodman Brown & Other Short Stories by Hawthorne, Romeo & Juliet by Shakespeare, and the poetry of Robert Frost. (All of the above titles can be found in Dover Thrift editions except for Where the Red Fern Grows.) |
| Spanish One Grades 9th & Up 3:00-4:00pm (Bring your own books or add $95 new book fee, $50 used) ISBN Numbers Are: Ven Conmigo Textbook: 0-03-096522-5 Grammar Workbook: 0-03-051379-0 We use the curriculum Ven Conmigo level one by Holt Rhinehart Winston. This class is open to those who are either brand new to Spanish, or have had 'child' classes in the past. This is a great class. Students will be expected to spend three to four hours a week at home working on their weekly lessons and practicing vocabulary. |
| Studio Art & Art History Grades 5th- 7th 2:00pm-3:00pm MOST SUPPLIES INCLUDED Students need to bring in a heavyweight drawing pad, a basic 5 piece acrylic brush set, & 6 11x14 canvas boards. OR you have the option to pay a supply fee of $30. This is a wonderful class for those both interested in learning the basics of studio art and about the great artists who have influenced the art world. Materials we will use include- Graphite Pencils, Color Pencils, Charcoal, Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint, Oil Pastels, & Clay Techniques we will study are- Composition, Layout & Design, Shading, Quartering, How to use color, Shading, & more This is a technique based class- not project based- so your child will learn "how to draw what he sees" versus "how to draw a tree". A studio art class is a great way to expose your child to various medias until the find the concentration which suits them best. This is a great class for those who have had some formal instruction or who have always expressed an interest in art. |
| Essay & Creative Writing Skills Grades 2nd-4th 1:00pm-2:00pm ALL SUPPLIES INCLUDED! This is a great class to introduce your child to writing! We will study creative writing- setting a scene, showing detail through words, sequence of events- we even learn a little haiku! Students will also learn very basic essay skills- how to write a paragraph essay and summarize a book or event. Students will keep weekly journals and learn how to put their thoughts to paper. If your child has not had any writing experience- or is reluctant to try- this is a great way to get started! This is not your run of the mill "boring" writing class- in this class, we make writing FUN! |
| Grammar & Essay Skills Grades 5th- 7th 11:30am-12:30pm Workbook Fee $8 Grammar & essay skills are probably the least favorite of any middle schooler! In this class, we have fun learning the ins and outs of Grammar, the whys of language, and the hows of writing. On the essay side of things- Students will learn to write book reports, short essays, three paragraph essays, and how to form both basic & complex outlines. Students will also learn how to edit their own work as well as that of others. On the grammar side- Students will review elementary applications such as parts of speech, sentence structure, tense agreement, voice, and punctuation. They will also learn new applications such as phrasing, comma usage, advanced punctuation, conjunction functions and how to avoid fragments, comma splices and run-ons. This class may not make language arts your child's favorite subject- but it will make it one of his least dreaded subjects! The students have a great time learning this difficult subject together! |
| Language Arts & Literature/Reading Comprehension Grades 5th- 7th 10:30am-11:30am Workbook Fee $8 This class is great for those who are reading on a 6th grade or above reading level. 5th graders who are struggling with reading are welcome to join the class, but may need extra help at home. All students are taught from the same set of materials and are encouraged to read additional books at home. Reading Rewards will be given to those who complete a certain number of 'outside' reading hours! In this class, we will focus on building a sold language arts foundation. We will also build reading skills through short stories and paragraph studies. Students will learn spelling and vocabulary tips & techniques that will help them in all areas of study! This is a great class to help spark your child's interest in reading or to help those already interested to excel! |
| Grammar & Essay Skills Grades 8th & Up 9:30am-10:30am Workbook Fee $8 We will thoroughly review basic grammar rules and learn more advanced applications. Students will work with sentence diagramming & why each part of speech is used the way it is. We will also study basic high school essay writing skills. They will learn how to organize & express their thoughts on paper through note taking and advanced outline building. Essay styles we will learn include- informative, persuasive, compare/contrast, opinion, and expository. Students will also be introduced to MLA style analytical essays. Students will also learn basic editing skills and correct comma usage. Students will also keep weekly journals and have learn how to write both creatively and comprehensively. This is a great class for your reluctant writer and those who are struggling with- or have not yet been introduced to upper middle/high school grammar! Many students have a hard time when it comes to grammar & writing- I will break each step down for them to make it both enjoyable and comprehensible. |
| Beginning Studio Art & Art History Grades 2nd-4th 4:00pm-5:00pm ALL SUPPLIES INCLUDED! This is a great creative outlet for your younger kids! In this class, we incorporate both 'project learning' and 'technique' learning. Some weeks we will have a completed work of art to go home and others we will have practiced various art techniques. Students will enjoy using a variety of art medias such as graphite & color pencil, oil pastel, chalk, charcoal and acrylic paint. We will also study various textile arts such as mosaics and paper making. This is a great class to get the creative juices flowing! Students are not limited by their abilities and all skill levels are praised. |
| Price is $285 per year/per class. Payments may be made in full or with postdated checks in weekly or monthly installments. Families with multiple enrollment will receive a $20 discount off of each class after the first one. Some classes require a supply purchase or supply fee.
